RHUBARB RHUBARB

Rhubarb can be rampant in the garden and take over - so this is how Babylonstoren deals with it.
Everything they do is so perfect. Sigh.

A friend gave me a huge  Pick 'n Pay pekkit full of rhubarb from her garden today and I've been purring at it for the last couple of hours, deciding what to do. I've had a few rhubarb disasters before in my life including the hideous stringy pink-grey slime that came out of the Waitrose tin when I was making crumble for our Royal Wedding party a few years ago. That was a shocker. Nearly put me off rhubarb for life, it did. I've failed to wash it before (custard & grit. Not nice) forgot about it in the oven on many occasions (sticky caramelised magenta mess. Impossible to clean ) and biggest crime of all, under-sugared it when cooking. Rhubarb needs a LOT of sugar.

Shall I make a rhubarb crumble as I usually do? Nigella's crumble recipe is a good one and a great excuse to get some jersey cream to go with it.

Nothing's nicer than a rhubarb compote and plain yoghurt for breakfast, and I'm not a breakfast person. I like Eggs Benedict at 11am thanks or a fry-up on Sunday morning along with the New York Times. Perhaps a croissant at Buvette in Paris. Otherwise it's usually a grumpy cup of Joko, drunk half cold as I look for school socks and shout at the dogs.

Something I'm dying to try is this Rhubarb Self Saucing Pudding, so may give that a go or I'm also really keen to make this Danish Rhubarb Cake with Cardamon + Custard.  Boys start Half Term tomorrow, so I should probably row out the boat a bit as we now have rather good school caterers and there is a need to keep them coming home. Georgie & William had calamari and chips the other day for lunch for Crying Out Loud - I can't compete with that. This Rhubarb Pie looks a bit Mama Goddess-ish, so I may emulate that in order to close the gap a bit.

I cannot tell you how much pleasure I derive from starting a blog post with the sentence "a friend gave me a large bunch of rhubarb from her garden today....."
